Private Parks in Jackson Heights
There are 20 private parks in Jackson Heights. There are also gardens, courtyards, and extensive curb-site planting areas in the historic district. These green lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubbery are the hallmarks of classic Jackson Heights. It was the original plan of the the Queensboro Corporation to develop a “garden city,” and the company required architects to incorporate a large proportion of greenery in every site. You can still see the effect this had on construction, where often only half or less of the property’s footprint includes the building. At the time of construction, this idea was groundbreaking. It remains surprising. The buildings that have maintained their large private parks and courtyards are highly desirable for this “garden city” feel.

The neighborhood of Jackson Heights has the most private parks of any neighborhood in New York City.
